When Superfriends originally came on the air, I was 4 and got up every Saturday morning at 7 to watch them. I try to catch it when it comes on, but I appreciate it in a completely different way nowadays. Each episode is so insanely illogical and they average a plot hole about every 15 seconds. It's just awesome how much disdain the writers had for kids, "who gives a crap if it makes sense or not, in order for this story to work, the bat rocket just happens to have a button that takes it to Krypton 30 years in the past."

But occasionally I see something on this show that goes above and beyond the call of duty. Let's take tonight's story, a lark of a tale wherein an evil scientist made a ray to turn the earth back into the caveman era so he can rule with his...uh...unstoppable army of cavemen. Who could make this stuff up? Anyway, the wondertwins were, of course, captured and put in a wooden cage on wheels. Anyway, one thing leads to another and they start shooting down this hill toward a cliff. Being slightly more useful than a cheese sandwich, Jayna turns into an elephant for some reason that I missed and this fails to resolve the situation. Zan uses his mighty power to turn into a bunch of water and creates a pool at the bottom of the cliff of the cage and his elephant sister to fall into. Now she's swimming around in him which is a little sick in the first place. Then the dialog goes something like:

Jayna: A quick rescue like that deserves a kiss.
Zan: Yuck. Next time can we do that without the kiss.
Jayna: No time for brotherly compliments. We've got to get moving.

Now, this is a cartoon in which the censors wouldn't allow anyone to get punched (all the fights are these odd kind of grabby affairs). So, all I can say is nice job on keeping the violence to a minimum, censors, but you kind of missed the boat on the incest.

Did I mention that occasionally the Superfriends will also try to teach you magic tricks? Right now I'm watching one starring Aquaman and Green Lantern. They are trying to save miners trapped in a flooded mine. Green Lantern has the most powerful weapon in the universe, it can make anything he can think of. Their solution to the flooded mine problem was to airlift in a whale that Aquaman could use to bust through walls to get the miners out. Green Lantern's parting advice to the soggy miners was "Next time you're in a fix, be like a diamond. You'll come out shining under pressure." This show's awesome.
